Philosophy

Every illness or problem can be thought of as both a story and a puzzle. My goal is to get the full story and arrange all the puzzle pieces so that the most likely diagnosis emerges. From that point, parents and I work out where to go next: whether to begin a treatment, gather more information (do tests), try some things at home, or simply allow a little more time to go by (the venerable “watchful waiting”). By this process, my hope is that you will feel you have been carefully listened to, your child’s situation has been thoughtfully considered, a good treatment or ‘game plan’ has been put into action, and you and your child have spent time with a physician who truly cares about you and the reason for your visit.

Barry Auerbach, MD

Biography
Dr. Auerbach is a board certified, experienced, and caring pediatrician who has lived and worked in the Richmond area since 1998. Supporting children from birth to 21, Dr. Auerbach provides high quality and compassionate care to his patients at all stages of growth and development. He is a practitioner of up-to-date, evidence-based pediatric medicine, and strongly believes in preventative care, particularly in the use of immunizations to minimize the risk of severe, debilitating, and potentially deadly infectious illnesses. He also feels strongly about the growing problem of the over-prescribing of antibiotics and strives to be very careful in their use.

Dr. Auerbach completed his medical education at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency training at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA. Following this, he received a Master of Public Health degree at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD. After several years working in vaccine clinical research, as well as helping to train pediatric residents at the Harriet Lane Clinic at Johns Hopkins Hospital, he began practicing primary care pediatrics in 1991, which he continues today.​

Personal Interests
Dr. Auerbach loves to spend time with his family. He is very proud of his teen children and likes to keep up with their interests, including going to movies with his son and exploring new music with his daughter. The entire family enjoys cooking, trying new foods, traveling, appreciating art, and sampling chocolate.

A bit of a geek, he has always loved astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology, and is fascinated by technology. Though he tries to keep pace with advances in gadgetry, he rarely buys!
